Have you ever found a song that you could listen to over and over and never get tired of? That song for me is Gackt’s “Lust for Blood,” which is on his “Crescent” album.
The song, which is about lost love and the misery of repeating the same mistakes over and over, has incredible depth of emotion, as you can tell from the video below. It doesn’t just tell the story of two people whose romance is over. It’s also the story of anyone who finds that they’re their own worst enemy in love.
Lyric translation:
My uncertain soul melts entirely into oblivion
While I’m puzzled by the visible scars, I stretch out my hand
In a bright white field of vision, at the end, time is uncontrollable
The tears running off won’t come back, the promise from that day
No one could stop them, the tears only we could forgive at our parting
The past promise we made to stop the mistakes from repeating over again
I was unfulfilled by the constantly overflowing passions
If only just for a little while …, I want to return to human form.
If you’re going to erase the pains in my Heart, then go right ahead and kill me
Don’t look so lonely, at least at the end I want you to smile
Just for you.
Take another breath
You can’t find what’s important
Destroy all of the peace
Make the same mistake over again
No one could stop them, the tears only we could forgive at our parting
The past promise we made to stop the mistakes from repeating over again.

Of the first several bands/performers I discovered when I started listening to J-Pop and J-Rock (L’arc~en~ciel, Utada Hikaru, Aikawa Nanase, Gackt, etc.) Gackt has remained my favorite. His music is incredibly diverse, ranging from pop (sounding a bit like Oingo-Boingo’s “Dead Man’s Party” with “Soleil”) to hard rock, with tunes like “Ash” and “Returner.”
The only thing I regret is that I was three years behind the curve in discovering his music. But such is the life of an otaku in exile.
